Convenient Teeth Whitening to Brighten Your Smile
A bright, sparkling smile can have a tremendous impact on your overall appearance, as well as your self-confidence. If you suffer from tooth discoloration, we offer two types of teeth whitening to enhance your smile.
What Is Teeth Whitening?
Like most adults, you probably suffer from some dental stains – even if you practice outstanding dental hygiene. There are two types of tooth discoloration. Intrinsic stains are located inside of teeth, and they are usually the result of certain medications, health conditions, internal tooth damage, or a developing tooth infection. Although teeth whitening cannot address this type of discoloration, we offer several other cosmetic treatments that can transform your smile. Extrinsic stains are far more common. They appear because of smoking, genetics, and certain foods. Fortunately, teeth whitening treatment is highly effective at removing extrinsic discoloration.
In-office teeth whitening can lighten your smile in less than an hour. Your dentist or dental assistant will cover your teeth in a whitening gel. The gel will chemically break down stained molecules, leaving your teeth up to ten shades lighter. At the same time, the gel will not harm your dental enamel or the underlying layers of your teeth.
At-home treatment can have similar results, although it will take longer to complete the treatment. Dr. Pietrok or Dr. St. Germain will provide custom whitening trays, made from impressions of your teeth. You will also receive a supply of whitening gel, which you will place inside the trays. For the next two weeks, you will wear the trays for 30 to 45 minutes a day. As with our in-office treatment, the gel will chemically break down dental stains.
The Benefits of Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening can have tremendous cosmetic advantages. Even mild discoloration can significantly impact your appearance and make you look several years older. No matter which type of whitening you select, you can enjoy a brighter, more youthful smile. In turn, you could enjoy a huge boost of confidence. You may be more willing to smile in front of others. You may even notice changes in your career; your newfound self-confidence may encourage you to take on more leadership and responsibilities at work.
Are You a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
If you have mild to moderate extrinsic dental stains, you may be a candidate for teeth whitening. Please let us know at your consultation if you suffer from dental sensitivity. You may be more suited to dentist supervised in-office whitening. If you have intrinsic discoloration, we may still have a treatment to meet your needs. Porcelain veneers and dental bonding can cover up even the most severe stains. Ultimately, the only way to determine your candidacy for teeth whitening is to schedule an appointment with one of our cosmetic dentists.
