When Should You Seek Emergency Dental Care?

When you sustain any damage, or experience severe discomfort, in your teeth or gums, then you have a dental emergency. To prevent these problems from growing worse, your Omaha, NE, dentist offers same day and after-hours treatment. In today’s blog, we’re looking at common emergency situations and how to respond to them!

The Dangers of Ignoring a Damaged Tooth

The outer layer of our tooth is called enamel, and it is the hardest substance in the human body. However, when we damage a tooth this compromises the outer layer and exposes the inner layers of dentin to harmful bacteria, leading to a greater risk of sensitivity, discomfort, tooth decay, and even dental infection. Even if your chips or cracks appear minor, please schedule a visit so we can examine your smile and make sure. The longer you neglect your damaged the tooth, the more likely serious oral health problems can form.

The First Response to Many Emergency Situations

Remember that you can call our office after hours or on weekends, so we can see you as soon as possible should you encounter an emergency situation. With a chipped or cracked tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and use a bit of cloth of gauze to stem any bleeding. If you can recover any lost pieces of your teeth, then bring them with you. We may be able to address minor damage in a single visit in some cases!

If a tooth is avulsed, or knocked loose, then only pick the tooth up by the crown, or visible portion. Then place the tooth in a glass of milk or salt water. Bring it with you to see us as quickly as possible. If you don’t have milk or salt water available, then rinse away any dirt or debris under gently running water and carefully insert the tooth back into the socket. Bite down gently to hold it in place until you can see us.

If a restoration, like a crown or filling, comes loose or falls out, then see us right away. Try to avoid any hot or cold foods and drinks, or foods and drinks with high sugar content, as this could lead to serious sensitivity. Finally, if an object is stuck between your teeth, only use floss to try and dislodge it. If this fails, let us know. Using anything other than floss could mean inadvertently damaging your gums or tooth structure!
